Acceptance is one of my favourite words in life. Often we feel unhappy and frustrated when we can’t accept a situation and when we want it to be something else or we can’t accept a part of ourselves and we want to get rid of it. Obviously if we can change a situation to make it better then that is great, but there are so many occasions when things can’t be changed in life and we have to stop fighting and tell ourselves that ‘it is what it is’. The one thing that we can change is our reactions to things and this is a key area of work in therapy. It’s good to focus on what we can control and not what we can’t control. If we rely on external things to change then we can be setting ourselves up for disappointment because sometimes some things can’t be changed.
